As such, artificial sweeteners can contribute to the likelihood of developing diabetes or obesity. Sugar substitutes: These synthetic substances are usually marketed as being healthy alternatives to sugar but these health benefits may not be as advertised. For example, some studies indicate that diet soda drinkers may face a higher risk of developing heart disease than those who don’t consume any soda at all. Moreover, these substances can affect how the bacteria in your gut process food which then affects your appetite and how much fat you produce from food digestion
